Teach Your Children How to Safely Use Garage Doors

While convenient, garage doors can be dangerous, which is why garage door safety should be a priority in family homes where young children are present. As an example, garage door springs are constantly under huge amounts of tension, which while necessary to their operation, can be a risk to any curious kids around. For this reason, it’s important that children are aware of basic garage door safety from an early age.

Below are a few tips to ensure that your little ones are aware of any potential safety risks garage doors pose, as well as how to avoid them.

Show Kids How Your Garage Door Works

Children are naturally curious, so one of the best ways to teach them about garage door safety is by simply showing them how your garage door works. It’s a good idea to show them the garage door in action  and gently inform them of the risks garage doors pose and how it’s not a good idea to play with or around garage doors, no matter whether they’re open or closed. More on this in the next section.

Point Out and Explain the Risks

Sometimes, simply showing a child how a garage door works might not be enough to convince them of the potential risks. It’s worth pointing out that garage doors are extremely heavy and that it can injure people – even adults if not used properly. Remember not to scare them though!

Make sure your kids are aware of how important it is not to touch or play with the garage door. Be sure to remind kids that, as fun as it may sound, it’s absolutely not safe to “race” a descending garage door, regardless of how slowly it’s moving.  It is also not safe to hang onto a moving garage door or try to “ride it” up or down. Last but not least, let young children know that operating garage doors is best left to the adults.  Speaking of adults, never operate your garage door unless you can see the door and know there is nothing in the way and it is safe to do so.

Garage door safety is one of the most important factors for any parent or grandparent living with kids. By simply going over the above with your children you’re proactively preventing any accidents and ensuring that your home remains a safe environment.
