Selecting A Garage Door Colour: Do’s and Don’ts

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make is picking the wrong colour for their garage door. If your garage is in the front it likely makes up a large portion of your house.  With curb appeal having such a huge impact on a home’s value it’s important to choose a door style and colour that adds value to your home instead of subtracting from your home’s value.  Choosing the wrong colour can either draw too much attention to the door or even downplay it entirely, which is why it’s essential you choose the right colour from the get-go. Though this may seem like a difficult task, picking a garage door colour that perfectly complements the rest of your house is easier than it sounds.

To help you make the right choice, we’ve put together a list of do’s and don’ts when selecting a garage door colour.

Do: Take a Photo of Your House

Regardless of how well you think you know your home; a simple photograph of your home’s exterior can be a huge help when picking a garage door style and colour. Having a photograph of your home handy allows you to better choose the colours that match your home’s current colour scheme, easily determine whether your chosen garage door colour clashes with your home or trim’s colour, gives designers and garage door companies a better idea of what they have to work with, and helps you make a more informed decision.

Do: Choose the Same Colour As Your House

Painting your garage door the same colour as the rest of your house is a surefire way to end up with a great result. This allows your garage door to seamlessly blend in with your home’s exterior and can even make your property look bigger. If you decide to go this route, be sure to consider the colour of your front door, windows, and shutters to ensure that all colours work together and nothing clashes.

Most garage door manufacturers offer a variety of standard colours to choose from.  Some even allow you to factory order the colour of your choice.  Alternately you can always hire a painter to spray your door after it is installed.  Any trim around the garage door can be painted to either match the rest of the trim around your home. However, there are some cases where a contrasting trim colour might work out better.

Don’t: Pick Your Favorite Colour and Stick with It

While picking your favorite colour may not always be a bad thing, picking a colour that clashes with the rest of your home can lower your property’s aesthetic appeal. That’s not to say you have to pick a colour you don’t like, however. So, rather than sticking with your favorite colour, think outside the box and explore different shades. Take the time to figure out what matches both your home and your personal taste.

Don’t: Do What Everyone Else Is Doing

When it comes to your garage door colour, it may be tempting to just take a look at what your neighbors are doing and do the same. While there’s no harm in being conventional, don’t do what everyone else is doing just for the sake of it. Chances are, most of your neighbors have a standard white door whether it is the right colour for their home or not.  If there is no other white on the home this is usually a mistake and will look like no thought was given to cosmetics and a standard off the rack door was installed. However, on houses with white siding or trim, white can be the best choice and look fantastic.

If you like a more traditional look, then so be it. If you prefer a different colour to your friends or neighbors, then more power to you. Always prioritize your and your home’s best interests when selecting a garage door colour.
