Preparing for Your Garage Door Installation

Congratulations! You’ve outsourced the installation of your new garage door, and to be honest, it’s a good thing. Garage door installation is very dangerous if not properly trained in the numerous steps that must be followed exactly to avoid injury. You also won’t have to spend time figuring out where to put this and that, lifting heavy parts, and working on the electronics.
But first, here’s a highlight of what you can generally expect for the installation of your new garage door:

  • Site evaluation: The installers may visit your home before installation day to evaluate the site and discuss the process with you.
  • Removal of the old: Say goodbye to your old garage door! The technicians will carefully remove it to make way for the new one.
  • Installation and testing: Your new garage door will be expertly installed, and the opener thoroughly tested. The installers might reprogram it to ensure optimal performance.
  • Electrical work: Don’t worry, this is part of the job. The installation process includes connecting the opener and any accessories, which may involve some low voltage wiring and attaching components to your garage walls, beams, and ceiling. If you don’t have an electrical outlet near the motor you may need to hire an electrician to install one.

Plan for a Smooth Installation

To make the process hassle-free, keep in mind the following factors that you should consider prior to the installation day:

  • Scheduling: Choose an installation date and time that works best for you. Avoid cancelling or rescheduling to prevent any miscommunications or extra costs.
  • Weather: While installers can work in various conditions, severe weather can cause delays. Monitor the forecast and discuss rescheduling options with your installer if necessary.
  • Electrical outlets: If you’re installing a garage door opener or other electronic accessories, ensure you have a working electrical outlet nearby. You may need to hire an electrician to install one if needed.
  • Be present and available: It’s best to be present when the installation team arrives. While they don’t need constant supervision, you should be available to answer any questions that may arise.
  • Confirm your order: Keep all invoices, estimates, and notes regarding your garage door’s configuration. Review these documents with the installer to confirm your selections and avoid any incorrect orders.

Clear and Clean the Installation Area Ahead of Time

garage door installation

Doing so makes the installation safe and efficient, as installers will have enough space to work on your new garage door. It also ensures that your belongings can be safer from any accidental damage.

Inside your garage, move vehicles, tools, trash bins, bicycles, and any other items that could obstruct the installation. A good rule of thumb is to have at least one foot of clear space on each side of the door track and eighteen feet of clear space back into the garage. Consider removing any valuables to prevent damage.

Communicate: Ask Questions and Clarify Things

Clear communication is essential throughout the process. If you have any specific requirements, concerns, or last-minute changes, don’t hesitate to contact your installation team. The more questions you ask beforehand, the smoother the installation will be.

Wrapping Up

By following these simple steps, you can ensure a smooth and efficient garage door installation. Your installers and technicians will appreciate your efforts in preparing for their arrival.

Garage Door Trends That Will Transform Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Garage doors have evolved beyond their traditional purpose of merely securing vehicles. They now add to both the aesthetics and functionality of your home.

With various cutting-edge materials and technological integrations available, searching online or going to the store to select the right garage door is exciting.

This article will explore the latest trends in garage door materials to help you make an informed choice.

Modern Traditional Garage Doors

These doors maintain the timeless appeal of traditional doors while offering the durability and low maintenance of modern materials. Below are some of your best bets:

  • Wood-look steel doors: These doors mimic the appearance of wood but are made from steel, providing the charm of wood without the upkeep.
  • Composite wooden doors: Blend traditional wood aesthetics with modern, eco-friendly materials to offer the best of both reliability and style.

Metallic Finishes and High-Shine Reflective Touches

Want to give your garage door a sleek and sophisticated look? Make it stand out in your neighbourhood with two of the rising trends in garage door aesthetics:

  • Metallic finishes: These are increasingly popular for their contemporary appeal. Options like brushed nickel or bronze can provide a stunning, mirror-like finish.
  • Reflective coatings: Often used for a high-shine effect, these coatings can give your garage door a polished, modern appearance.

Smart Home Integration

Smart home technology has significantly impacted garage door trends, and with the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, homeowners can now enjoy things like:

  • Remote control and monitoring: Use smartphone apps to open, close, and keep an eye on the garage door from anywhere.
  • Voice activation: Virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home offer voice controls for hands-free operation.
  • Enhanced security features: Automated locks and real-time notifications keep you informed and in control.

Sustainable Materials

As environmental awareness grows, sustainable materials have become a significant trend in garage door manufacturing. Here are some eco-friendly options that don’t compromise on durability or style:

  • Recycled steel: Steel offers strength and sustainability.
  • Composites: Specially formulated mixed materials can offer the look of real wood but with lower maintenance.
  • Wood: Specialty woods like Batu are very dense resulting great resilience for outdoor use.

Energy-Efficient and Battery-Powered Garage Doors

Energy efficiency is important for modern homes, and garage doors are no exception. The following trends maximize energy efficiency and incorporate battery-powered solutions for uninterrupted functionality:

  • Insulated garage doors: These provide superior temperature regulation, reducing energy costs.
  • Battery backups: Ensure your garage door operates even during power outages.
  • Solar-powered options: Harness the power of the sun to open and close your garage door, further reducing your carbon footprint.
  • Emergency accessibility: In situations where you need to quickly exit with your car during emergencies—like a natural disaster or urgent medical situation—battery-powered and solar options ensure your garage door remains operational, providing you with a quick and reliable exit.

LED-Equipped Garage Doors

It’s easy to overlook lighting in garage door design, but it can significantly impact functionality and safety. In fact, it’s one of the garage door trends you wouldn’t wanna miss out on.

Compared to traditional fluorescent bulbs, built-in LEDs emit less radio frequency (RF) noise. This reduction helps maintain proper signal transmission for your garage door and even optimal Wi-Fi performance in your home.

Wrapping Up

From modern traditional designs to high-tech smart home integrations, the latest garage door trends offer something for every homeowner. Whether you’re looking for sustainability, energy efficiency, or aesthetics, there’s a garage door material to suit your needs.

All that’s left to do now is to explore these trends to find the perfect addition to your home.

However, if you’re unsure or need assistance picking out the right garage door, reach out to our team of experts at The Door House. With us, you can stay ahead of the curve and transform your garage with the latest materials and technologies—worry-free!

Quiet Operation Matters: Choosing A Silent Garage Door Opener

If you want a silent garage door, there are a number of options and techniques to understand. Yes, the various choices can make all the difference in getting that unwanted noise out of the picture.

The good news is that with a quiet opener, you’re not only eliminating noise. Let’s begin.

What’s the Most Silent Garage Door Opener?

We’ll cut to the chase: belt-driven openers are the quietest.  This is not only because they don’t have metal chains, but the entire system is designed to be much quieter.

Openers with belt drives have systems made with either steel-reinforced rubber, fibreglass, or polyurethane. A design with any of these three materials lets the trolley operate more quietly, which equals better, peaceful operation for garages that are next to bedrooms or living spaces.

Belt-driven openers aren’t always the least expensive ones but the much quieter and often more durable machines are well worth the small difference in cost.

Here are the other options you have:

  • Chain drive: The most durable and affordable; best suited for detached garages due to the noise it makes
  • Screw drive: less noisy than chain-drive, but can be less reliable in very cold weather.
  • Jackshaft: Mount on the front wall beside the door so they fit garages with obstructions, like beams. These are the quietest option because they greatly reduce vibration transfer to rooms above the garage because they are not mounted to the ceiling.  Unfortunately, they are also the most expensive option.

AC vs. DC Motors

Two types of motors—alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC)—can be used in a garage door opener, which also affects noise levels.

AC motors generate energy through coils that wrap the output shaft, and the whole process happens via magnetic fields. Openers with AC motors are primarily more economical but they are much louder. They’re also more likely to feature a chain drive, which equals more noise.

Meanwhile, you’ll see more belt-driven openers with DC motors, a more expensive but quieter option. These motors can also reverse more seamlessly than AC ones, with opening and closing mechanisms at variable speeds that are gentler for your garage door.

So DC-powered belt drives are the better option for silent garage doors, but again, there’s more to it than quiet performance.

Benefits of Having a Silent Garage Door

Yes, a silent one has more benefits. Here are some of them:

  • More savings: Belt-driven, DC-powered garage door openers come with a significant initial investment, but they’re more energy-efficient.
  • Peaceful operation: It’s easy for a noisy garage door to annoy you or, worse, give you anxiety when standing there waiting for it to open and close.
  • Lessening noise disturbances: You won’t want your garage door to disturb anyone sleeping, eating or even just relaxing—including your neighbours!

What to Do with a Noisy Garage Door

If your garage door is supposed to be silent but still makes noises, here are some tips to troubleshoot and solve the problem:

  • Find where the noise comes from: torsion springs, loose nuts, bolts, hinges, and rollers are the common points that make noises. Note that disassembling your garage door system can be dangerous so don’t loosen any screws.
  • Apply the solutions: You can either lubricate the springs and rollers when the door is closed, and tighten any loose nuts and bolts on the hinges.
  • Seek help from a professional: From identifying the source of noise down to choosing the best type of garage door opener, a professional can always assist you, especially when there’s danger, or you don’t think you have the time to troubleshoot. They can also replace the rollers on your garage door with newer silent rollers. Don’t attempt to do this job yourself as some of the brackets holding them are under extreme tension and serious injury can result from loosening the wrong fastener.

The Door House has experts to guide you with anything we haven’t discussed about silent garage doors, including any related inquiry. Feel free to contact us today, and we’ll help you come up with a garage door plan that suits your needs!

Garage Door Emergency Release Mechanism

Rare instances may arise when you need an emergency release mechanism on your garage door, such as during a power outage or if the motor malfunctions. It’s crucial to know how to do this without causing damage, especially when you need to leave for work.

Read on to learn more about how emergency release mechanisms in your garage work, why you need them and how to use them.

Why Do You Need To Have an Emergency Release Mechanism?

Here are some scenarios where you might find yourself unable to access your garage:

  • Power outage
  • Overhead opener is out
  • Lost remote
  • Safety hazards such as fire
  • Accidental lock-in

In these and many other scenarios, not having an emergency release mechanism could mean being locked out of your garage. This is where the garage door emergency release mechanism comes into play, providing a simple and effective solution to ensure you can always access your garage, even when the power is out, or the opener isn’t working.  Fortunately, garage door openers have had emergency release mechanisms built in for over 40 years due to national building safety codes.

So, How Does It Work?

To open the garage door manually using the emergency release mechanism, proceed as follows: From inside the garage, locate the red pull rope with red handle on it hanging from your electric opener.  Pull the emergency release rope by using the handle to pull downward with a firm tug. What this does is detach the overhead garage door from the opener, allowing the door to be opened manually.  Now you should be able to easily lift your garage door manually to get out or in.  Keep in mind, this will not work if you have a problem with the actual garage door itself in which case you will likely need to call a pro for help.

If you’re unable to lift your door after using the emergency release, never hesitate to ask a professional. If you need help, contact Door House today.

Eco-Friendly Garage Doors: Sustainable Options for Your Home

When it comes to sustainability, energy consumption is always a central topic, usually beginning at home. Why not start with one of the first things we see before entering our houses?

Eco-friendly garage doors are now available, crafted from sustainable materials or designed to lower electricity bills and leave a smaller carbon footprint. In this article, we’ll walk you through the basics of eco-friendly garage doors and their materials, features, and designs.

The Need for Eco-Friendly Garage Doors

Our traditional garage doors have served their purpose for decades but weren’t built with the environment in mind. Many traditional doors have non-recyclable materials that don’t degrade, ending up as additional waste in our landfills.

Adding to that is the lack of temperature control features, which results in higher energy consumption.

With eco-friendly garage doors, the benefits extend far beyond improving the welfare of our planet. These include:

  • Energy efficiency: Eco-friendly garage doors provide better insulation, so you’ll maintain optimal temperatures in your garage. This means you can rely less on your heating and cooling systems and save more on consumption.
  • Improved aesthetics: There are a variety of design and material options for eco-friendly garage doors. These include repurposed wood, steel, PVC and composite materials which are easily designed by manufacturers with your curb appeal in mind.
  • A healthier indoor environment: Some traditional garage door makers use volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals can off-gas into the air and lead to air pollution inside your garage. Eco-friendly garage doors have little to no VOCs, reducing the risk of health issues they can cause.

It’s clear that eco-friendly garage doors are a wise investment for any sustainable household.

Materials for Eco-Friendly Garage Doors

As mentioned before, there are a number of options when it comes to the materials used for eco-friendly garage doors. Here’s a closer look at some of them:

  • Wood: This material provides a classic aesthetic while being renewable, recyclable, locally grown, and biodegradable. Just keep in mind that wood may require a bit more maintenance and isn’t an ideal choice for very humid regions.
  • Recycled steel: Easily one of the most durable choices for eco-friendly garage doors, this material is the strongest and most cost competitive of them all.
  • Composite: Doors made from composite materials often combine recycled wood and plastic, making them a sustainable, durable, and energy-efficient choice. They are more expensive, but for select homeowners, the dramatically improved curb appeal is worth it.
  • Aluminum: This is quite similar to steel in terms of recyclability. Furthermore, aluminum is naturally resistant to corrosion and rust, making it a low-maintenance material for eco-friendly garage doors. Usually, glass panels are used in conjunction with the aluminum frame for a high end contemporary look.
  • Insulated vinyl: You’ll get dent and rust resistance from this material. Even better, insulated vinyl provides enough insulation to help you keep optimal temperatures in your garage. Due to the significantly increased cost, vinyl doors are primarily used in coastal areas where rusting due to sea salt is a significant concern.

Tip: When looking for an eco-friendly garage door, make sure to consider the local climate, the style of your house, and your budget.

Design and Features of Eco-Friendly Garage Doors

Eco-friendly garage doors don’t just come in sustainable and energy-efficient material options. To take their environment-friendliness to the next level, manufacturers include additional design options and features:

  • Improved sealing and insulation
  • Windows with controlled light transmittance
  • Recycled materials

Simply put, these garage doors let us do more while still helping preserve our planet in this era of environmental awareness.

How Garage Door Sensors Help You Enhance Home Security

Garage door sensors help prevent garage doors from closing on anything accidentally. But did you know that these small devices also play an integral role in helping you secure your home from potential dangers?

How Garage Door Sensors Operate

Garage door sensors use infrared tech. A beam of light allows them to detect objects or people in the path of a closing door. If something interrupts the beam while the door is closing, the sensor communicates with the garage door motor and tells it to stop or reverse.

Simply put, it prevents damage and injuries a garage door can cause to vehicles, pets, people, and other types of property.

Types of Garage Door Sensors

You might want to know first about the types of sensors available today. Generally, there are two:

  • Photoelectric: Experts refer to this type as the ‘electric eye.’ It’s the one we discussed above. Photoelectric sensors are more common due to infrared being a more affordable tech.
  • Pressure-based: When a garage door hits something, this type of sensor receives the impact and signals the door to stop or reverse.

Security Benefits of Garage Door Sensors

While garage door sensors are common, not many realize the role they play in home security. Here are some of the security benefits:

1. Garage Door Sensors Protect a Garage Door’s Operation

The main purpose of sensors is to prevent your door from hitting anything, and it goes the other way around. With your garage door safe from any contact, you ensure the longevity of your first line of security.

2. Integration with Home Security Systems

Many garage door sensors can communicate with contemporary security systems now. Modern wifi technology allows these sensors to send status reports to preset devices, enabling you to check whether an unauthorized person has attempted to enter your home.

Even better, you can integrate these sensors with other monitoring equipment to further enhance security.

3. Protection from Unwanted Operation

While these events are extremely rare, they still happen. There’s a possibility of a garage door opening and closing on its own. This can happen when no one is home, meaning potential intruders will gain easy access to your property.

A garage door sensor can then alert you of any unusual operation, or if the error is not with the sensor itself, even help the door close eventually.

How to Fix Garage Door Sensor Issues

In general, you may encounter the following issues that can disrupt the functionality of your garage door sensors:

  • Misalignment
  • Dust and dirt
  • Wiring problems
  • Sensor obstruction

You can fix these problems without professional help most of the time. For example, if there’s a misalignment, you can check the manual on how to adjust the sensors to their correct position.

Meanwhile, ensure you have a regular schedule for cleaning, as this allows you to get rid of dust and dirt. These are the most common culprits that obstruct the sensor.

When to Call a Professional

Any part of your garage door can malfunction even if you maintain and operate it properly. And while you can fix these problems on your own, sometimes, you may not have the time to do so.

If that happens, you can always ask for professional help to avoid further damage or any accidents that can happen.

The Door House is here to help should you have concerns about your garage door sensors. We have garage door experts to address all your garage door needs. Want to know more? Reach out to us today.

The Ultimate Guide to Garage Door Maintenance

Who hasn’t experienced rushing to work or taking the children to school and getting stuck due to our garage doors malfunctioning? The scenarios vary. It may refuse to budge or, even worse, get jammed halfway through.

It’s normal – there are some of us so busy that we overlook how important garage door maintenance is. But regular upkeep can do so much to prevent these problems. Even better, it can even extend the lifespan of garage doors. This, in turn, saves us time, money, and all that frustration.

Simply put, scheduled garage door maintenance is more crucial than some think.

Understanding Garage Door Systems

Sectional Overhead garage doors have some common key components, like:

  • Springs: These mechanisms let the system lift and lower the door.
  • Cables: Work in tandem with springs to move the door.
  • Rollers: Help the door glide smoothly on the track.
  • Tracks: Guides the movement of the door up and down.
  • Sections: The main body of the door.

With you knowing the basic types and parts, it’ll be easier to implement garage door maintenance. Make sure to check how to locate, remove, and maintain these components safely.

Basic Garage Door Maintenance Tasks Everyone Should Be Doing

These doors are similar to the other parts of our home – they require regular care for optimal performance. Prolonged neglect of garage door maintenance can result in inconvenient (if not hazardous) scenarios.

The good news is that you can prevent these problems by performing regular do-it-yourself maintenance.

Lubrication

Garage door maintenance is nothing without a well-lubricated system.

Apply a high quality spray lubricant to the roller and hinges, ensuring your garage door can operate smoothly, quietly and with minimal strain.

Checking the Balance

If your garage door is off balance, it can put significant weight on the opener and other components, leading to premature wear.

One simple way to test is by disconnecting the garage door opener and manually opening the garage door halfway. If it stays put, the door is good to go. If it tilts to either side, adjusting can be risky, so call a garage door maintenance professional.

Inspecting and Replacing the Rollers

You should check steel and nylon rollers every six months, even though they last up to twelve years.

If you use the door many times daily, you can inspect and replace the rollers more often. Note that chipped or cracked rollers can affect the other parts of your garage doors.

Examining the Cables and Pulleys

The last step for your garage door maintenance routine is to check the high-tension cables – these are the ones that lift your door, so you shouldn’t see any damage.

You can also check for broken strands, kinks or rust. The presence of these issues would most likely require a professional due to the high tension, which can cause serious injuries if they break.

Final Thoughts

While most of these maintenance steps are easy, there’s still a chance that you can’t perform one or two of them. Whether that’s the case or you think it’s better done by a professional, don’t worry; The Door House can take care of everything you need for your garage door maintenance.

The Future of Garage Door Technology: What to Expect

For many, garage doors are just entrances for our vehicles. But like several house features that have improved through the years, these entry points have become part of our home’s aesthetics, security, and convenience.

Even more improvements are bound to come. So, what’s in it for you? Here, we’ll guide you through the evolution of garage doors and what you can expect in the next decade.

The Evolution of Garage Door Technology

The history of garage doors can go back to the creation of barns, where sliding doors secured horses and carts. When cars were first introduced, many had to be parked in public structures.

As more people could afford them, parking areas were built close to their homes, and the garage was born. At first, garage doors had the same sliding mechanism as barn doors or hinges that opened outwards. These two options were difficult to operate and had a large footprint.

Things only changed when fabricated internal hinges were applied to the mechanism of garage doors—the overhead door. In the 1930s, C.G. Johnson, who also invented overhead doors, added electricity to the process.

Features of Modern Garage Door Technologies

Today, many garage doors still use the overhead door’s mechanism but with extra characteristics and home automation tech. Here are some notable features:

  • Insulation and sealing capabilities: Garage doors are now thermal resistant with superior insulating qualities, saving on energy costs. Arctic-grade and full-perimeter weather seals help you achieve desired temperatures regardless of the season—all while preventing dust and pests from entering.
  • Theft alarms: With a home security alarm system, you can add an extra layer of protection with garage doors equipped with theft alarms. These systems offer peace of mind by alerting homeowners of unauthorized access attempts.
  • Ultra-quiet operations: Silence is precious, especially for garage door technology and operations. Ultra-quiet lift features keep the peace for you and your neighbours, especially when you have to open your garage door at night.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity: Smart homes allow residents to control several things from their smartphones or tablets. This means that people can enjoy the convenience of operating and checking their garage doors from anywhere in the world.
  • Accident safety: With the integration of impact sensors, garage door technology has never been safer. These smart sensors detect objects or individuals in the doorway and automatically reverse the door’s motion to prevent accidents.

The Future of Garage Door Technology

According to Moore’s Law, the number of transistors in a microchip doubles every two years—meaning computers get faster at that same pace. What’ll surprise you is that AI has already beaten that, according to studies.

We can operate many home features via voice commands already, and AI is getting closer to another breakthrough: predictive maintenance and fault detection.

In the engineering industry, AI can analyze sensor data and the historical performance of certain devices. In doing so, it predicts when a device is likely to fail and recommends users some maintenance actions, hence helping with cost reductions.

It only gets better with Internet of Things (IoT) tech, which lets devices exchange data online. With IoT now able to measure energy consumption, work with other home devices, and read patterns of physical movement, it’s only a matter of a few years before we see garage doors use minimal energy and operate without us saying a word.

Professional Garage Door Installation: Investing in Peace of Mind

A garage is useful for many things: protecting your vehicle, storing your belongings, and easily leaving or returning home. However, all of these functions are impeded without a functional garage door.

It’s rare to experience a breakage in your garage door, but it does happen – and often at the most inconvenient of times. You may be trying to leave home and find that the door has stopped opening or will only lift to a certain point.

In that case, what should you do? It can be difficult to find a DIY solution, especially in a crunch.  It’s also important to be aware that some components on garage doors are under extreme tension and loosening the wrong fastener can result in catastrophic injury.  That’s where professional garage door service and installation comes in.

Why Opt for Professional Garage Door Installation?

There are a few telltale signs your garage door needs replacement. Pay attention to any of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive noise
  • Involuntary door movement
  • Higher energy bills
  • Difficulty opening and closing
  • Misaligned tracks
  • Excessive rust or rot
  • Sagging or flexing of door sections

Don’t wait for a combination of all of these. A single symptom is enough for you to consider your options, and one excellent option is professional garage door installation. Let’s take a closer look.

Safety and Security Assurance

Professional garage door installation gives you an added element of safety and security. Experts know how to install and properly adjust the latest safety features, like auto-reverse mechanisms and sensors. Having these ensures you’re safe from accidents and injuries caused by garage doors that lack the newest technology.

Enhanced Curb Appeal and Overall Operation

It’s always reassuring to know that your home products are being installed correctly, which is why hiring a professional can give you peace of mind. Experienced professionals also have a good idea of what complements the architectural style of your house, so they can point you toward a style that suits its overall aesthetic appeal.

A garage door that is professionally installed tends to work more smoothly in general. This not only adds convenience but also ensures that your garage door functions optimally for years to come.

Increased Energy Efficiency

With professional garage installation, technicians are knowledgeable about what problems may arise after the installation. This includes the gaps that need to be sealed and other insulation problems.

Professionals can help minimize heat loss or gain, depending on the season. Remember: improved insulation can result in reduced energy consumption, lower utility bills and increased comfort.

Long-Term Durability + Warranty Coverage

A professional technician will know how to mount everything correctly, set the programming, and teach you how to do it. In doing so, they make sure that your garage door is aligned well, balanced, and supported by its mount and installed properly so as not to void your warranty.

You can say goodbye to frequent repairs – and any repairs down the track come with a warranty, giving you peace of mind should any issue arise again.

What Your Tech Can Do Aside from Professional Garage Door Installation

Professional garage door installation isn’t all that the installers do. Here are a few things that you can call them for:

  • Maintenance
  • Regular inspection
  • Complete adjustments and repairs
  • Upgrade your garage door with modern-day features and tech

Professional technicians are there to address all of your garage door needs either via repairs, upgrades, or an entire replacement.

Final Thoughts

Having a professional garage door installation offers a plethora of benefits compared to do it yourself installations.

With professional garage door installation, you can enjoy more than just a functioning door. You’ll receive a service that ensures safety and quality. It’ll save you from repair costs, and the installed door will last for a long time to come.

Together, these factors are what make professional garage door installation a smart and savvy investment. Contact us at The Door House today to learn more about how we can help you with your garage doors.

Building A New Garage: What Every Homeowner Should Know

This is probably one of the most exciting projects to work on for your new home. Or maybe you’re just planning for a renovation of your garage. Whichever’s the case, you’re on the right page, as we’ll discuss here everything you need to know before starting your new garage construction.

Planning a garage build or remodel is about maximizing space, enhancing your home’s value, and potentially creating an additional area for work or leisure. But there’s more than just that.

Consider Zoning Laws

Before you start working on your new garage construction, be sure to check the local zoning laws. Each municipality has specific bylaws defining land use zones and setting standards, such as building size and location. Avoid facing hefty fines or potential jail time for non-compliance by doing this crucial step.

Remember, it’s not just about building a structure; it’s about respecting the community laws.

Attached vs. Detached Garage

An attached garage, as the name suggests, is physically linked to the main house. It shares at least one common wall and offers convenience, acting like another room that affords easy and weather-protected access to your home.

On the other hand, a detached garage stands alone, providing more flexibility for its location, shape, and size. It gives you freedom for additional features, such as a loft, but remember that its separate location means interacting with the outdoor elements when moving between the garage and the house.

It’s Not Just for Doors

Garages offer a versatile space for a variety of activities, not just parking your vehicles. Here are a few other uses that you may have in mind:

  • Home Gym: Save on gym memberships by dedicating a corner of your garage to exercise equipment. Add rubber mats and proper ventilation to make the space workout-ready.
  • Workshop: A garage can provide a robust space for your crafts, such as woodworking, painting, or pottery. Install good lighting to ensure safety and accuracy while working on projects.
  • Play or Rec Room: Create a fun space where kids can play or teenagers can hang out. Keep the area safe by using floor mats and storing dangerous tools and chemicals out of reach.
  • Storage: Of course, you can never go wrong with extra storage space. But keep things organized with shelves and boxes labelled for easy access.

Climate Control

Whether you’re using your garage for storing items, working out, or as an office, adequate ventilation, heating, and cooling systems are crucial. These ensure the longevity of your belongings and provide comfort during extreme weather conditions.

Proper insulation can also help regulate temperatures and lower energy costs. A well-conditioned garage contributes to the overall functionality of this valuable space in your home.

Garage Door and Electricals

Selecting the right garage door isn’t simply about aesthetics; it can be a crucial security decision. A robust door can deter potential trespassers, and modern automated doors even offer advanced safety features.

Meanwhile, here’s a checklist for everything electrical:

  1. Light fixtures: Ensure enough lighting for visibility and security.
  2. Power outlets: Plan for ample outlets considering their potential uses.
  3. Wiring: Set up for improvements like automated door systems.
  4. Safety measures: Install circuit breakers to prevent electrical overloads.

Investing in these details can go a long way in ensuring your garage is practical, safe, and secure.

Don’t Forget Your Driveway!

The driveway and garage floor, while easily overlooked, endure a lot of wear and tear. Opting for durable materials, like concrete or paving stones for driveways and epoxy coatings for garage floors, can enhance their longevity. Regular maintenance, such as prompt repair of any cracks, also ensures a long lifespan.

Thinking of starting your garage project? Reach out to us today to ensure your garage doors are not only practical, safe, and secure but also stylish and efficient. Transforming your garage starts with a call to The Door House!

How To Prepare Your Garage For Winter

Throwing snowballs, drinking hot cocoa, making angels in the snow – these are a few of the delights that come along with winter. If you’re not prepared for the season, though, it can come with a nasty bite.

Procuring warm clothing, installing winter tires, and insulating your home are top winter prep priorities. Similarly, winter garage preparation is a vital aspect of getting your home ready for the colder months.

You can always benefit from a few reminders on winterizing garage areas. That’s why we compiled some of the things you can do to winter-proof everything you put in this part of your lovely home.

Clean, Clean, Clean

When winter hits, the last thing you want is a collection of leaves, dirt, debris, your tools, insects –practically everything that’s exposed the season before – to end up frozen. It’s time to tidy away everything left untended in the fall. Just like a spring clean, a thorough sweep, dusting, and decluttering of your garage can make a huge difference.

Don’t neglect corners and hidden spots where dust and pests could accumulate.

Cleanliness is nothing without organization, too. Make sure that the things you use in summer go back to the containers they belong to. Meanwhile, winter tools should be easily accessible and ready for use.

Know What to Seal

Sealing is a crucial component of winter garage preparation to block cold air, moisture, and critters. Let’s zero in on the essential garage elements requiring sealing:

  • Concrete: Winter can make concrete floors cold and damp. Applying a concrete sealer keeps your floor warmer, prevents water absorption, and resists oil stains.
  • Doors and Windows: Drafts indicate energy waste. Seal gaps in the garage doors and windows using weatherstripping. This preserves indoor heat and helps you lessen heating costs.
  • Small Openings: Tiny holes around cables, pipes, and wires are often underestimated. Seal them with expanding foam or caulk – a simple solution with a huge impact on indoor warmth.
  • Paint: High-quality latex paint adds an additional layer of insulation. It functions as a barrier against dampness, creating a cozier atmosphere inside.

…And Where to Ventilate

As you learn about winterizing garage areas, it’s essential to remember that while sealing keeps cold air out, ventilation allows damp air to escape. Proper ventilation encourages evaporation; it’s crucial for preventing moisture build-up, which can lead to mold and mildew issues.

This balance of seal and ventilation can be effectively achieved at home using wall vents.

Insulate Pipes

Never, ever forget this. Aside from blown pipes being a mess to clean up, it’s going to mess up another aspect of your home as well: your finances.

The solution is as simple as insulating your pipes. Foam pipe insulation, available at most hardware stores, is easy to install and provides a first line of defense against the winter chill. Remember to give extra attention to pipes near garage doors, windows, and unheated areas of the garage, as these are the most susceptible to freezing.

Inspect Your Garage Door

Often the largest moving part of one’s home, garage doors are frequently exposed to weather and, therefore, prone to wear and tear. Inspect the doors for any damages from the colder months last year – warps, cracks, or breaks that could invite the winter cold into your garage need to be addressed.

Check the insulation in the door, too, ensuring it’s still capable of providing the necessary thermal resistance. If not, consider weatherstripping or investing in an insulated garage door.

Don’t forget about the door’s mechanical aspects. Lubricating the metal components like rollers and hinges can help prevent them from freezing in colder temperatures.

Have Experts Do It For You

If there’s anything related to your garage door that you can’t fix, don’t hesitate to reach out to a reputable garage door company for assistance. Whether it’s a stubborn door or an issue with insulation, professionals have the expertise to ensure your garage door is never out of your winter garage preparation list.

How to Open a Garage Door Without Power

Imagine this global lights-out scenario: computers lifeless, refrigerated food spoiling, and cities cloaked in an eerie silence.

Now, scratch the disaster movie scene and bring it down to your neighbourhood – not as dramatic, but still a nightmare. Consider your garage door, a simple daily convenience that transforms into an impenetrable fortress when the power fades.

Well, you’re in luck (assuming you’re reading this as a precaution)! This article will outline exactly how to open a garage door without power.

Leave No Room for Hazard

Before you brave the challenge, it’s crucial to take some safety precautions, which we’ll address before proceeding to our step-by-step guide.

  • Power Threats: If you don’t have a surge protector on your garage door opener you should unplug the opener. This step is crucial for preventing harm from potential sudden power surges when electricity is restored.
  • Door Collapses: Never pull the emergency release rope when your door is up. It could come crashing down and hurt someone.
  • Total Lockouts: Here’s a small task worth remembering – ensure you have another way into your home before leaving through your garage. Overlooking this step could magnify your problems, leaving you locked out of your home.
  • Further Issues: Once power returns, monitor your door’s movement. Any lack of smoothness is a sign you need the help of a professional.

Remember that you should prioritize these safety measures before you attempt to open a garage door manually when there is no power.

Step-By-Step Guide to Opening Your Garage Door Without Power

Let’s see how you can open a garage door from the inside when the power’s out.  Unfortunately, in most cases there is no way to open the door from the outside if you have an electric opener and the power goes out.  Obviously, if you were able to easily open it from outside so could anyone else which would be a serious security concern.

Step 1 – Locate the Emergency Release Kit

Finding the emergency release kit is your first step. It’s typically centred near the top of your garage door.  In most cases it will be a red rope marked with a handle labelled emergency release.

Step 2 – Trigger the Manual Mode

Pull the red emergency release rope, which temporarily disconnects the door from the electric opener.  Usually you will hear a pop when it disconnects.  Voila, you’ve just shifted your garage door into manual mode!

Step 3 — Lift the Garage Door

Time for a bit of elbow grease. Grab a handle or one of the hinges and lift up the door until fully open. Check that it is stable stays open without drifting back down.  If it wants to drift downward it’s a sign the springs require adjustment and you will need to prop the door up to hold it open.  If the door doesn’t stay open you will need to call a door company to service the springs.  DO NOT attempt to adjust the springs your self as they are under extreme tension and serious injury can result.

Step 5 – Re-Engage the Release Mechanism

Close the door once you have moved cars in or out of the garage. The next thing you should do is manually push the lever upwards or tug the release cord back and away from the door until you hear that satisfying click. There you have it. Your garage door mechanism is snapped back into the engaged position and when the power is restored it should open the door again.

Remember, some planning and practice can make easy work of what might initially seem like a mountainous task. So, familiarize yourself with this process, and you’ll have no problem navigating a power outage. Stay safe, and don’t forget to call a professional if you encounter any hitches!

5 Garage Upgrades That Add Value To Your Home

We all know that your house is more than just a sanctuary and a place to call home – it’s an investment. You have probably invested considerable value in upgrading areas such as the kitchen, bathroom, and living rooms, but the humble garage often gets overlooked.

Just like the home, the garage is more than just a place to park your car and store your holiday decorations, it’s a versatile space with a huge amount of potential.

This guide will explore five upgrades you can do to your garage that not only boost its functionality but significantly increase the overall value of your home.

1. Enhance Security and Safety

The garage can often be a target for thieves. After all, it’s where you tend to store one of your most valuable possessions – your car.

A well-secured garage boosts the overall security of your home, giving potential buyers peace of mind. Modern security devices and features can range from cameras and sensors to wifi connected automated garage door openers.

Cameras: Installing security cameras act as a huge deterrent for potential burglars. Cameras allow you to monitor the garage remotely and record any suspicious activity, which can be passed on to law enforcement.

Sensor Lights: When movement is detected in or around the garage, sensor lights illuminate the immediate area. This provides safety for the homeowner and discourages anyone from snooping around your home.

Garage Door Opener: Modern remote-controlled garage door openers enhance security with state-of-the-art features such as rolling codes to prevent code grabbing. Many models now have wifi built in allowing you con control your door from anywhere in the world you have wifi access.  You can also receive alerts if your door opens while you are away from home.

Safety IR Beam: If you have children or pets, this device represents both an investment in value and safety. The infrared safety beam detects obstacles under the garage door and prevents it from closing.

2. Smart Storage Solution

If your garage seems cluttered, then you’re not alone. It’s a very common sight in many households. With a smart storage solution, your garage can become a well-organized space that appeals to buyers.

Installing shelving units, cabinets, bike holders, and overhead storage not only tidies up the garage space but makes your garage appear larger and more functional.

3. Replace the Flooring

From oil spills to heavy machinery, the garage floor endures a lot. Replacing the flooring with a more durable material will help withstand this wear while enhancing the look of your garage.

Easy-to-Clean Flooring: Installing a stain-resistant and easy-to-clean floor makes your garage much more maintenance friendly. This is a desirable feature for any homeowner.

Professionally Laid Epoxy: Providing a professional look to your garage, an epoxy coating is an ultra-durable surface that resists chemicals, stains, and abrasions.

Tiling: Interlocking type garage floor tiles add huge visual appeal to the space, they’re a popular choice for homeowners looking for durability.

Vinyl: Available in a massive variety of designs, vinyl flooring is low maintenance and resistant to wear. It also allows customization of the space to your liking.

4. Invest in a New Garage Door

An old worn-out garage door is not only difficult to live with but can also detract from the curb appeal of your home.  In fact, garage door replacement regularly ranks as #1 or #2 in return on investment of any renovation project.

Replacing your old door with a new, stylish, and efficient model can boost not only your home’s value but save you money in the long run with increased energy efficiency.

Modern garage doors offer insulation, which reduces energy costs, and also come in a wide variety of styles, colors and designs to complement your home.

5. Converting the Garage into a Livable Space

Your garage is intended to park and store your vehicle, but if it’s not living up to its name, then why not consider transforming it into a livable space?

Your garage can easily become a spare bedroom, home office, or extra living space. It will increase your home’s official square footage and make it more versatile.

It is important to note, however, that garage conversions do typically require the homeowner to acquire specific permits and adhere to standards and regulations before commencing work.

Conclusion

With these upgrades, your garage holds the potential to be more than just car storage. From security enhancements and flooring to smart storage and a brand-new garage door, you can transform your garage into an asset rather than an afterthought.

Dented Garage Door: Can It Be Fixed?

Having a dent in your garage door can be an eyesore and take away from the overall aesthetics of your home. Fortunately, there are several fixes available depending on how large the dent is. If it’s minor, you may be able to repair it and make it look as good as new again. However, if the damage is more severe, then you may need to consider replacing your door altogether.  The door in the photo above would require complete replacement.

This post will discuss how to fix minor dents in your garage door, as well as what to do if the damage is too severe and needs to be replaced.

Evaluate the Damage

The first step is to evaluate the damage and determine if it’s minor or extensive. Minor dents typically don’t require replacing the door, whereas larger ones may need more attention.

If you have a non-insulated steel door you might be able to push out the dent from inside your garage. However, if your door is insulated there is usually no way to repair the dent because there is no access to the front steel skin of the door.  If the door section itself is bent you should consult a professional before attempting any repairs.

Fixing Minor Dents Yourself

If the dents in your garage door are on the small side and you have a non-insulated door, you can try to make the dent less obvious by placing a block of wood on the inside of the door behind the dent and tapping it with a hammer.  You will likely still be able to see the dent when you’re finished but hopefully it will be less obvious.  Again, this method only works with non-insulated steel doors.

Replacing a Severely Dented Garage Door

If the dent is too severe and you can’t fix it, then it’s best to replace your garage door. If the door model you have is still in production it might be possible to just replace the one dented door section.  Section replacements are not cheap so typically if more than one section requires replacement it is better to replace the entire door.  You should consult an expert for advice on which would be most suitable for your needs.

Replacing your garage door may seem like a daunting task, but there are many benefits that come with this choice. Newer doors usually have better insulation and security features, as well as improved aesthetics that will enhance the look of your home.

Bottom Line

Minor dents in your non-insulated garage door can be sometimes be fixed.  However, most doors in Canada are insulated and dents are not fixable. If the door section itself is bent (no longer straight) the section or door will likely need to be replaced. Here at The Door House, we are experts in the field and can help you with repair or replacement.  Let us help you find the perfect garage door for your home.

Should I Service My Garage Door?

Your garage door is more than just an entryway to your home – it’s critical to your property’s security. Despite that, many homeowners don’t give it the attention and maintenance it needs until something goes wrong.

Strange noises, erratic behaviour, and other signs are indicators that servicing is required. Regular maintenance ensures your garage door runs smoothly for years and avoids potential problems.

In this article, we’ll discuss the benefits of regular servicing, DIY tips for upkeep, and when to call in a professional for help. Let’s dive in!

Top Benefits of Regular Garage Door Service

Before we discuss when to service your garage door, let’s look at the benefits of regular maintenance.

  • Security: Your garage keeps your vehicles and other personal belongings safe. Regular servicing ensures that all door components are in good working order, which can prevent potential break-in attempts.
  • Safety: Keeping your garage door and electric door opener properly adjusted helps to keep you and your family safe by ensuring all safety features are working and adjusted properly.  Garage doors can weigh anywhere from 100lbs to over 700 lbs.  An improperly adjusted door can cause serious damage and/or injury.
  • Longevity: By taking proactive steps to keep your garage door in optimal condition, you can extend its life. Regular maintenance is an investment that pays off, helping you avoid expensive fixes and ensure a smooth-running system for years to come.
  • Peace of Mind: Regularly servicing your garage door minimizes potential risks from intruders or unfavourable weather conditions. Keeping on top of maintenance will give you peace of mind that your door is running smoothly and reliably.
  • Avoiding Costly Repairs: Regular inspections allow you to catch minor problems before they become big issues. This will help you avoid costly repairs and keep your door functioning smoothly.

When Should I Service a Garage Door?

Now that we’ve discussed the benefits of maintenance, when should you service your garage door? Here are a few signs that it’s time to take a look.

  • Slow to Respond: If your garage door is sluggish to open or shut, it may be a tell-tale sign that maintenance is required.
  • Strange Noises: Sometimes, you’ll hear strange noises from your garage door. This could be an indicator that something needs to be serviced or replaced.
  • Malfunctioning Remote: Check out the batteries first if your garage opener transmitter isn’t working correctly. If it still doesn’t work, check with a repair professional.
  • Visible Damages: Any visible damages such as dents, scratches, or rust should also be addressed ASAP because they can lead to further issues down the line if left unchecked.
  • Excessive Wear and Tear: Worn-out components can cause the door to malfunction or become stuck in certain positions.
  • Getting Stuck: You wouldn’t want your garage door stuck in the middle of opening or closing. If this happens, it’s time to call a professional for help.
  • Wrong Alignment: Check closely for any misalignment between the track and roller. This is a sign that something needs to be serviced or replaced.

DIY Tips to Keep Garage Doors Running Smoothly

Sometimes, all it takes is a little elbow grease to keep your garage door in good condition. Here are some garage door service and maintenance tips you can do on your own.

  • Clean the Tracks: Remove any dirt, debris or grime built up in the tracks over time. This will help ensure the smooth operation of the garage door. Tracks should not have any lubricant in them as it will only serve to attract dust and dirt.
  • Lubricate Moving Parts: Use lubricant to reduce friction between moving parts and ensure everything runs smoothly. The primary components that require lubrication are the rollers and hinges.
  • Check for Loose Hardware: Tighten loose nuts and bolts around the system to prevent rattling noises and other malfunctions.

Garage Door Hacking: How to Prevent It

Garage doors are a common entry point for burglars. With the right tools, they can easily access your home or business and steal your belongings.

Thankfully, there are some steps you can take to prevent hackers from compromising your garage door security system. By following these tips, you can ensure that your home is safe from any unwanted intruders.

Understand the Risks

Before you can protect against garage door hacking, you must understand what it is and how it works. Garage door hacking is an attack where malicious actors use specialized tools to gain access to your home or business via its automated garage door opener.

Hackers can bypass the security system by manipulating certain aspects such as wireless signals and the physical locking system. Once they gain access, they may be able to steal items from inside your home or business premises.

Here are some of the most commonly used methods to hack a garage door:

  • Wireless Signal Capture – Hackers can use devices called code grabbers to capture the signal your garage door remote sends out when you press it. This allows them to easily repeat the signal and open your garage door. Fortunately, since the early 2000’s, most garage door opener manufacturers have been using “rolling code” technology to combat this hack.  With rolling codes, each code used when you press your remote control will only work once and it will not open the door a 2nd time, rendering any code thieves get useless.  The next code used is random out of 100 million possible codes so there is no way for thieves to break in.  If you have a garage door opener manufactured prior to 2003 it is highly recommended you replace it with a new opener to eliminate this problem.

  • Physical Access Point Attacks – By law, all garage door openers have an emergency release rope you can pull to easily disconnect the door from the electric opener, allowing you to manually lift the door in case of a power outage or garage door opener failure. Unfortunately, it is fairly common for thieves to use a coat hanger to fish between the top weather-strip and the garage door to hook onto the emergency release rope and pull it.  This only takes seconds and once done the thief can easily raise the door by hand from outside.  Concerned homeowners have been known to disable the emergency release but unfortunately this is illegal.  If there is ever an emergency (think fire) and someone is trapped in the garage they have no way out.  If someone were to die in this sort of situation the liability incurred may be huge and insurance would likely decline coverage.  Fortunately, the Atoms Pro line of openers has introduced a patented tamper proof emergency release on their openers to solve this issue.  This simple solution stops fishing attempts while also retaining an easy and quick emergency release when needed.  You can see the Atoms Pro opener here.

Secure Your Garage Door

One of the best ways to protect against hackers is by installing a comprehensive security system with motion sensors, cameras, and alarms. This will help deter intruders from even attempting to break in through your garage door. By taking this proactive measure, you can significantly reduce the risk of intruders attempting to breach your garage door. The presence of a robust security system is often enough to deter potential intruders, giving you peace of mind knowing that your property is well protected.

Monitor Your Garage Door

Monitoring your garage door regularly is essential if you want to prevent garage door hacking attempts from occurring.  Many newer garage door openers offer wifi capability.  Wifi openers allow you to download the manufacturer’s app from the apple store and google play store onto your phone or tablet.  Once installed and connected to your wifi network you can monitor your garage door from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a wifi connection.  You can open and close your door remotely and you can set the app to send you an alert anytime the door is opened.

You could also consider investing in a security camera to capture video footage when someone tries to open the door without authorization. This will help you identify suspicious activities and take appropriate measures to protect yourself from potential intruders.

Stay Vigilant

Finally, staying vigilant is important when protecting your home or business against potential garage door hacking attempts. Regularly check for any signs of suspicious activity and take action if necessary.

Following these tips can significantly reduce the risk of garage door hacking and ensure your home or business remains safe from intruders.
